What is your dream?
My dream is to have an established fashion label specializing in couture/evening wear and ready-towear.
I want to be able to manufacture overseas; however not the standard way that most fashion labels do. I want to be able to make a positive impact on the world through a fashion label. I want to be able to have my own warehouses/work spaces where I can ensure they have proper pay and good work conditions. I want to give the women who need it most work opportunities, and to give them the chance to follow their own dreams.
How did you find your passion?
I started by sewing bags for a charity about 4 years ago. I discovered that I enjoyed sewing and
creating things. I decided to start sewing PJ's and eventually progressed into sewing clothing. I
realized I needed more skills in the area and went on to study fashion design. I have since fallen
more in love with sewing and designing.
Tell us about your dreams / goals for the next 12 months?
My goal for the next 12 months is to bring out a collection with a mix of evening/casual wear and
have it available for purchase online. I plan on showcasing and releasing the collection later this
How will the scholarship support your endeavours?
The Aim for the Stars scholarship will enable me to purchase sewing machine/overlocker for my
studio. My domestic sewing machine has served me well, but is not well equipped to handle the
amount of sewing I do. An industrial sewing machine will be a lot more suitable and it will be a great
long term investment as it will last me many many years.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
I have had many highlights in my journey so far, including magazine spreads, runway shows, and
working with many talented people I admire. But the biggest achievement for me is being where I
am today. Coming from a past that has had it's fair share of challenges, I never imagined that I could
make anything of my life. There was a long journey of getting where I am today, too long to share
here. But for me, the biggest highlight and achievement is simply to be here, to be where I am, and
to be able to dream and have those dreams start to come true. For that, I am incredibly grateful.
How important is inspiration in your life?
Inspiration is very important for me, especially as a creative person. I find that if I isolate myself, I
tend to get stuck in a rut. I am constantly looking around me to be inspired. Inspiration can be found
Who’s your hero (and why)?
I know so many people do have one person that they look up to; but for me, I don't really have one
person that I do look up to and aspire to be. I just want to be the best version of me that I can. To
me, the heroes are not the ones who everyone knows and talks about. The hero's are the ones who
choose to do something positive in their lives or the world, despite all the horrible things that life
may have thrown at them.
How will you support your community in the future?
I will be using my skills to give back to my community in a couple of ways. Currently, I volunteer at a
non for profit charity called Destiny Haven, which is a residential program for women with life
controlling issues. I teach girls how to sew, and I also sew products for them to sell. I also have
offered to design a one off custom design for every girl who finishes the program at Destiny Haven.
What’s the motto that you live by?
Be grateful for everything you do have, instead of what you don't have. There is always something to
be grateful for.
Give me anything with a good beat; dance tunes are my favorite. They get me motivated and
moving, especially when I'm working.
Coffee is a food right? I am a self confessed caffeine addict, followed closely by chocolate. On the
complete flip side, I love healthy burgers from Grilled!
Since I can never pick just one thing, I love books by authors Cathy Glass and by Tory Hayden.
They're both people who work with or foster troubled kids; and their stories. It just really
encourages me and reminds me that there are good people in the world.
Favourite TV Show?
Since I'm a fashion designer, I must say I love Project Runway, Top model, and anything fashion
If you had one message to share with other women chasing their dreams what would you say?
Don't be afraid to dream big. Dream impossible! If money was not an issue, if there were no
limitations at all, what would you want to do? Don't look at all the things that are standing in the
way; hold onto that dream and work towards it. All big dreams take time and work. There will be ups
and downs, times where things go really well, and other times where you learn what doesn't work.
I've learnt that if a door closes, there will always be another that opens. Don't be afraid to take the
opportunities that come along. If things don't seem to be going the way you planned, that's ok!
There is more than one way to get to the top of a mountain. The journey and destination is often
different to how you imagine it will be. Your dream will evolve and change as you grow and learn.
You were given a dream and a passion for a purpose. Don't ever forget that.
