It's International Women’s Day. Today we shine the spotlight on women who #pressforprogress to create change. Women like, Blanche D’Anastasi a passionate Marine Biologist from magical Magnetic Island in far north Queensland.
Blanche received a Scholarship from the Layne Beachley Foundation in 2017 to support a Deadly Science Getaway, a program that uses science as a platform to inspire Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
This program empowers incredible, strong, smart young women from some of the most remote communities on Earth to dream about careers that inspire them, by inviting them to participate in scientific field expeditions, in remote places.
Deadly Science Getaway is kicking big goals for women.
Graduates say they feel happy and inspired and proud to be involved. We see their sense of well-being and engagement in school elevate. Four young women have also said they want to lead their own Getaway on Bwgcolman (Palm Island) with our help
After working with over 100 participants in just seven years, the program has its first graduate. Evelyn Coleman. Evelyn's enrolled to do Nursing Science at James Cook University.
Blanche refers to Evelyn as an ‘an exceptional woman who will lead extraordinary change as a role model’. Blanche’s says that she is empowered by the women around her, including Layne and her team at the Foundation.
Being part of the Foundation is amazing. I had no idea when I applied about the awesome-ness that was about to come into my life. I discovered a community of women who not only do extraordinary things, they support and inspire the women around them. I feel so strong because of them.
Layne reinforces how important it is to have a strong group of females around. She says her strong network of female friends are her honesty barometers, that listen and who’s focus is to bring out the best.
We absolutely love what Blanche is doing. She embodies the essence of what how, what and why I started the Foundation back in 2003. Deadly Science Getaway has the potential to make a wide and far-reaching difference to many, many young girls, who will inspire other girls
The Layne Beachley Foundation is always open to new support, as it is a way to build both a network of donors and receivers. Join the incredible network of women by making an online donation,
