Name: Sarah Cook
I represented Australia for nine years, and at two Olympic Games for Rowing. I then changed sports entirely to Sailing competing for Australia in the Women’s 470 with Beijing Olympic Gold Medallist Elise Rechichi and have my sights set on Olympic Qualification and a World Championship medal in 2014. The Aim for the Stars grant will assist me greatly by helping to unburden some of the financial stress involved in training and competing full time, accompanied with part time study. Additional funding will allow me to focus fully on my training, rather than being continually stressed about how I will make ends meet, let alone compete for my country and be successful.
When did you start?
Despite having started my Olympic campaign many years ago now, I first set foot in a Sailing boat in October 2012, after the London Olympics.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
My sporting career highlights include competing in Rowing at the Beijing and London Olympics, and winning bronze at the 2006 Rowing World Championships and Silver at the 2010 World Championships. However my most rewarding experience thus far has been learning a completely new sport, which challenges me both physically and mentally.
What is your dream?
My dream is to win gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games for Sailing.
Who or what have inspired you?
My parents have taught me to work hard every day for what I dream to achieve, and that only hard work and a little bit of luck will make my dreams become reality.
Who's your hero?
People who work hard to follow their dreams and achieve. I am constantly inspired by incredible stories of success, despite major setbacks or failures, not just in sport but any field.
Any other special talents?
Dance and house, for listening to when I train. Otherwise, pretty much anything!
The Little Mermaid
Mao's Last Dancer
Favourite TV Show?
Chocolate and Mum's Pavlova
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
This grant will help me to compete and train full time, as we are not paid to train or compete at the Olympic Games. Sailing in particular is a very costly sport, and this money will go a long way towards helping me to train in 2014, which is a critical year as Olympic Qualification begins in September.
