Name: Samantha Young
Pursuit: I have applied to the foundation for support completing my MFA studies. The MFA course takes up approximately 60hours per week and leaves little time to earn a wage on the side. In order to get this far I have taken out loans, sought sponsorship and worked small projects that has seen me go months without a day off. The foundations support will allow me the ability to finish the course (something I legitimately wouldn't be able to do otherwise.)
My name is Samantha Young and I am a Theater-Maker (sometimes maker of films, music videos and terrible comedic dance moves). I trained as an Actor and I am currently completing my MFA in Directing at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. I realized very early on that I had to tell stories and that creativity was an integral part of how I interact with the world. I am passionate about comedy as a genre that teaches us how to live with difficulties. I love dogs and extravagant cakes and in an alternate universe I run a travelling dog cafe that sets up at arts festivals.
When did you start?
Its hard to answer when I started as I performed in amateur shows as a child, studied it in high school and then went on to study performance at university. I guess you could say I started when I first watched television as at 3 or 4 years and wanted to know how to become one of the miniature people inside the screen. Since then my inspiration and courage has at times wavered and yet I have always found a reason why the performing arts is essentially what I have to do.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
Winning the 2012 Young Achiever of the Year Award for the Northern Territory for both my artistic work but also my efforts in mentoring artists and arts advocacy.
What is your dream?
I want to be the Artistic Director of a theatre company or festival. Whilst my own work inspires me I am also very inspired by the work being created around me. I want to create opportunities for other people. I want to seek out amazing, generous, strange and innovative artists and give them a platform.
Who or what have inspired you?
I am inspired by the female Artistic Directors in this country as I believe we still have some way to go in the way we relate to women in positions of leadership. You can look at the break down of funding given to female VS male Directors in Hollywood for example and see glaring and obvious disparity. If you travel closer to home we still encounter disparity in board rooms, in news rooms and in lounge rooms.
Who's your hero?
My Mum. She sacrificed everything so I could be here.
I think Fiona Apple is a genius.
Favourite TV Show?
House of Cards
Anything meat/salad sandwich-ey. Its got everything you need!
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
The grant allows me to complete my studies so books, bags and bills!
Last words: Quote or Motto you live by?
"Quit Procrastinating. Focus on your art."
