Name: Rebecca Kinsella
Pursuit: My chosen pursuit is Social work. Through the support of AFTS I would love to complete my studying journey through accepting the opportunity to undertake my final student placement in India. The skills and experience gained from this placement would support my future goal to develop programs for empowering women in rural, regional and remote areas of Australia. Furthermore, the exposure to local self-governance in India may provide ideas for strengthening Indigenous community governance in Australia.
I am a Social work student from Melbourne and I am currently completing my Master of Social work (Qualifying) at Monash University. My passion for Social work began with the need to make sense of my experience growing up in a family where the people I loved, lived with physical disabilities, mental illness and drug and alcohol addictions. I spent a lot of time worrying and caring for others, and learning to understand these complex issues provided a way of coping. My interest in Social work however, transformed from understanding my own experience, to empowering others to understand their experiences.
When did you start?
My studying began with the completion of a Bachelor of Science, followed by Honours in psychology in 2004. This provided a solid knowledge base in mental illness and triggered my interest in a holistic approach to working with people that I found in Social work. I commenced my Master of Social work (Qualifying) in 2012.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
