What is your dream?
To keep attending dragon boat regattas and really get fit thus being an example to my family that
despite setbacks, life is worth living to the full. I dream of attending the next International Breast
Cancer Paddlers Commission Festival in Florence Italy in 2018 which is a convention and races for
breast cancer survivors . I am excited of course to participate but would be thrilled to win our race
and see the joy on my team mates faces as we cross the finish line like we did in Sarasota USA in
How did you find your passion?
I was lucky enough to be part of the inaugural Sydney Dragon Boat Festival held in 1984 in Farm
Cove and again in Perth in 1988 in corporal "fun" races. When I was recovering from breast cancer
my medical team recommended dragon boat paddling as a great exercise to minimise the risk of
cancer returning. Whilst I jumped at the chance it took me a while to find my mojo but my family,
team mates and coaches encouraged me all the way.
Tell us about your dreams / goals for the next 12 months?
I am determined to become really fit to compete in more varied races. This will mean training three times a week in our main season and plenty of gymn work. I'm aiming to be selected for the 8km challenge race which our Club organisers racing around Scotland Island. Next is the Pan Pacific Masters Games in November 2016 held on the Gold Coast. In between will be the usual races and if
all goes according to plan I would like to attend mid. next year the Ord River Race, a 55km marathon from Lake Argyle to Kununurra in WA. This program will be a great lead up to Florence in 2018.
How will the scholarship support your endeavours?
Like all sportspeople there are costs involved in attending major competitions but before that there is transport costs to attend practice which is 60 minutes away in peak hour traffic, gym fees, equipment and regular competition fees, This scholarship will help me of course with those
expenses and just as importantly keep me on track to keep training and achieving my goals.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
My biggest achievement was winning a race at Sarasota, Florida , USA in 2014. I will never forget the words of encouragement that Iris our drummer yelled as we pulled away form the pack "girls we are winning" and the look of pure joy as we crossed the line. To recover after being so weak from cancer treatment and then going on to win that race was wonderful.
How important is inspiration in your life?
I am someone who really needs goals otherwise I drift a long and its the same with my fitness. After Sarasota I have been a bit inconstant with my training looking for the next goal and not quite sure how to achieve that. I have had to delay my entry into the Ord River Challenge and already having won this scholarship I am back training and signing up for new competitions.
Who’s your hero (and why)?
Dragon Boat Paddling is not an individual sport nor is it a sport that usually recognises individual achievers. So for me it is no different in selecting my hero. Its my team mates who motivate me to do my best so I don't let them down in a race. The dragon boat saying that we are as strong as our weakest paddler is so true. Each member had played a part in my recovery and success. I have such admiration for these strong resilient women and thrive on their positive attitudes both on and off the water.
How will you support your community in the future?
I am currently on the committee of Pittwater Pinks and will continue to encourage breast cancer urvivors to get fit for their health and happiness and hopefully join our sport. I have been involved at work in a mentoring program for high school children and hope to continue this.
What’s the motto that you live by?
If you want something to change then you have to do something different
I love any music with a beat
My Mum's fish casserole.
Stephanie Alexander’s cook book – all of the recipes seem to work
Favourite TV Show?
The Bachelorette of course. I just loved the bro-romance.
If you had one message to share with other women chasing their dreams what would you say?
Dream big, seize every opportunity. You never know where it will lead you. Enjoy the journey!
