What is your dream?
My dream is to be a professional artist that travels the world teaching people and communities how to create beautiful artwork on a low budget. I want to give everyone access to the joy of being creative in an affordable and achievable way. To achieve my dream, I plan to start running small workshops in my local community and marketing my work through a website and Facebook account.
Tell us a bit about you.
I am currently a Visual Arts and Performing Arts teacher at Barcaldine State School in Central Queensland. My mother struggled to support four children, but along with my incredible grandparents, she always encouraged us to pursue an education and aim higher for ourselves than she ever achieved.
How have you demonstrated commitment?
I have now begun to expand my Art practices by attending workshops in the community, and have started networking with local art committees and local council to garner support for my future endeavours. I started drawing portraits when I was eight years old, and since then I have spent thousands of hours honing my skills to ensure I am producing the highest quality art I possibly can.
What challenges do you face?
I suffered severe depression and suicidal tendencies as a teenager, because I felt I wasn’t good enough for everyone else’s standards. I was motivated by my need to support my children and at times worked three jobs while raising two children and studying a teaching degree full time. I feel going through hardships in life make you a stronger person, which I now feel grateful for.
How will you use the money?
I will directly be putting the money back into the community. My plan is to buy a thermal screen printer for my students to use with the curriculum. I will use the remaining money to buy the resources I need to teach the community painting and drawing techniques. This program would require at least 20 easels, pencils, paper, paint, palettes, paintbrushes, paper towel, and hiring a venue to hold classes.
How do you plan to give back?
I will give back to the community by donating my time and services. I want to give the local community the most opportunities I possibly can while I am living here. Barcaldine people are the most generous and honest people I have ever met, and I would love to be able to help bring any amount of joy that I can.
