Name: Madeline Lawson
Pursuit: Pole Vault
Hi, I’m Maddie! I’m a 16 year old girl from Bendigo in Victoria. A place where the sport ‘Pole Vault’ is one that isn’t done by many. I am currently up for selection for the 2013 IAAF World Youth Championships and have already jumped my two needed qualifiers of 3.90m. Making this competition is just the starting block for the many international competitions i hope to make in the future.
When did you start?
I first started Pole Vault roughly two years ago when i was 14. It was something that I always wanted to try because it just looked like so much fun. Luckily for me, it was! After my very first session I knew that this was not only something I wanted to do just for fun, but something I wanted to become a professional at. From then on, I have revolved my whole life around this awesome sport.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
Finally jumping over 4m was a huge highlight as not many girls get over that barrier. Another highlight was when i snapped my very first pole! (Yes they snap!) This was a highlight because they say youre never a true pole vaulter until you snap a pole. My biggest achievement would be winning the Australian Junior National Titles.
What is your dream?
I hope that one day all of my hard work leads to making the Olympics so i can make all the people who have supported me and help me get to where i am proud and worshipped for all they have done.
Who or what have inspired you?
I don't really have a particular person or thing that inspires me. True stories about real people who have been through adversity or hardship is what makes me really open my eyes and inspires me to be the best I can.
Who's your hero?
My biggest hero is probably my mum.
Any other special talents?
balancing a spoon on my nose with no hands!
As long as it's not country or classical, I love it! Blink-182, Parkway Drive, Alt-j, Kanye West, and MANY MANY more!
Lords of Dogtown is my all-time favourite, never gets old
Favourite TV Show?
Geordie Shore. During school holidays when I actually have time to watch TV, this is what I watch for hours on end!
It is impossible for me to have a favourite! Any food that tastes good to me is my favourite food!
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
I travel roughly 1000km a week just to train for my vaulting. The money that I have been lucky enough to be provided with will help not only me but it will have a huge impact on my parents as they're the ones who go through ridiculous amounts of petrol just for me to be able to achieve this dream goal I have.
