What is your dream?
My biggest dream is to be the first string goalie of the Australian Women's Ice HockeyTeam and take them as far as possible. I plan to achieve this goal by achieving my little goals I set myself for each training, game, camp and tournament. The goals like keeping my focus, being technically correct (glove up, stick on ice), keeping fit and strong ( off ice training, weights). I beleive that by pushing myself to my limits with the little goals I can accomplish the bigger goals like winning against the teams I will verse in Austria and training my hardest to prove my coaches I am good enough to play for Australia when I go to the Australian team try outs after I'm finished with the U18 team.
How did you find your passion?
My parents met playing ice hockey, they quit just before I was born because it was too expensive. When I was eleven years old my family decided to go ice skating at Perth Ice Arena for mothers day and from there, my brother and I started ice skating and my parents started playing ice hockey, after 3 terms of learn to skate I decided to play ice hockey and was searching for ice hockey gear. An ex goaltenders mum gave me some second hand goalie gear and I decided to give it a go. I loved every second of it.
Tell us about your dreams / goals for the next 12 months?
I really need to concerntrate on getting strong and learning to become the 6th man on the ice ( coming out of the goals and getting the puck behind the net and passing it to players on my team) I want to get onto the tange team (western australias all male 18 and under team) and rank higher than bronze as in previous tournaments bronze is as high as ive gotten. I would also like to go back to U18 womens world qualifications and rank higher than 7th place as thats where we ranked at the start of this year.
How will the scholarship support your endeavours?
The funds will help me get to my next world championship which will be fantastic and less stress on myself and my parents to find the money to go. And the mentoring will help me to stay focused and motivated and reach my goals.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
Personally I feel that the biggest acheivement was getting the most valuable player award against Italy in the IIHF U18 womens world qualifications this year. I loved every minute of the game although I let in goals I still played well and loved every second on the ice.The adrenaline rush was amazing as the Italians peppered me with shots and it was the highest level of competition I had ever played in, it was a real challenge and hard work, it was amazing.
How important is inspiration in your life?
Inspiration is very important to me. I use quotes every day of my life to help me work through my goals and day. I have quotes and photos of great moments in hockey hanging up on my wall and I change them every once in a while.
Who’s your hero (and why)?
My parents (Jodie and Scott Atkins) are definitely my heroes. They have supported me in everything I do my entire life, they have let me make my own choices and even if they disagree with them they still support me the whole way! They have helped me where they can paying for all my trips and hockey costs even when we had hardly any food in the cupboards they still found money to let me live my dreams.
How will you support your community in the future?
My goals to help support the community in the future is to help develope ice hockey goalies all over australia. I want to coach goalies and run camps for them, I also want to coach on the U18 australian womens ice hockey team as the goaltender coach. Become the Goalie coordinator for WA or even Australia.
