Name: Katya Crema
Pursuit: Alpine Skiing
After years of Alpine Skiing, I switched to the new sport of Ski Cross in 2008, and never looked back. The sport is exciting, adrenaline-fuelled and action packed. After only two years in the sport, I qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. I finished 15th, and had one of the most incredible experiences of my life. My dream of becoming a dual Olympian has just been realised with my selection to represent Australia at Winter Olympics in Sochi. My goal at the Games is to place in the top 8. As ski racing has quite a low profile in Australia in comparison to many other summer sports, it is difficult to obtain sponsorship. Training year round, as well as completing a uni degree leaves little time for work.
When did you start?
I started skiing at age three at Mt Buller, Victoria. I joined the local race club at 11, and competed in Alpine for eight years. I then made the switch to Ski Cross when I was 19, and have been competing at a World Cup and Olympic level for the past six years.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
Career highlight is 15th at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. It was the most incredible experience to compete in front of my family and friends. Best results include 6th place at the Telluride World Cup in USA, 2012, and 8th place at the 2013 World Freestyle Championships in Voss, Norway. Biggest achievement is qualifying for my second Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
What is your dream?
My dream is to deliver my absolute best performance at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. My goal is to finish in the top 8.
Who or what have inspired you?
The Australian Winter Olympic Team inspires me. It is such an incredible group of athletes, each talented in their own right. The dedication and commitment shown by the team as a whole is inspiring.
Who's your hero?
Any other special talents?
I completed a Bachelors degree in Architecture in 2011, and have just started a Masters degree in Property at Melbourne Uni.
Changes all the time.
Favourite TV Show?
Fresh summer fruit.
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
The Layne Beachley grant will assist me greatly in paying for the numerous expenses associated with living overseas for six months of the year. The biggest costs are food and equipment.
