What is your dream?
My dream is to promote sustainable use of our oceans. Oceans have such an important role because
they support not only plants & animals, but human life as well. There is so little known about the
oceans & we exploit them without having any solid information about what the impacts may be. I
would also like to continue using my photos & art to help interest & educate people about the
environment & make looking after the environment normal. I would like to gain more knowledge &
experience in the marine field by; continuing to travel & attend marine science expos & seminars;
create more contacts & learn from other scientists; spend as much time as possible in or on the
How did you find your passion?
I have always liked the environment (especially marine), but the main reason for my passion is my
Dad. Pretty much everything I do is with my Dad. From the age of 2 I was out fishing with him. As I
got a bit bigger I started going out boating with him & snorkelling. At 5 my parents gave me my first
camera & I'm now using my photography skills to photograph wildlife & promote awareness of the
environment, as well as contributing to citizen science programs. When I turned 12 I got my scuba
diving ticket, my boat licence & also became an obsessive free diver. Being able to do these things
has led me to create contacts with a range of like minded people from: commercial & recreational
fishermen; Scientists; Divers ; Ocean Geographic Photographers; Artists & more.
Tell us about your dreams / goals for the next 12 months?
I'm a bit shy, so one of my main goals is to try & improve my confidence and public speaking. I would
like to improve my focus. To gain more skills in the marine environment.
How will the scholarship support your endeavours?
The scholarship will help to assist in the costs of things such as: advanced, safety & masters scuba
tickets; my coxswains ticket; my first aid ticket; camera & housing equipment. I'm also looking
forward to having a mentor to assist me.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
For me, every time spent on the water is a highlight so it's hard to choose because there are so
many. Some of my biggest achievements would probably be logging over 70 species on RED Map (an
online citizen science programme, which aims at creating a database for species found outside of
their range extinction). Finding a species of jellyfish called Cephea cephea. It's only the 2nd time that
the species has been found in Australia, the first being over 100 yrs ago in Queensland. My personal
favourite achievement is being able to do a 3:06min breath hold.
