Name: Ellie Norton
My name is Ellie Norton and I am a 15 years old ballet dancer. To realise my potential and achieve my dream, at age 14, I had to leave my family and everything I know in Brisbane and relocate on my own to Melbourne to study full time at the Australian Ballet School. I left behind my friends, teachers, all forms of performance and the life I knew to start an amazing journey.
My dream is to become a world class prima ballerina guest performing in Europe in some of the top ballet companies of the world such as the London Royal Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet and of course Australian Ballet. My first step is to train at a world leading facility – the Australian Ballet School and achieve my best.
When did you start?
I was taken to my first ballet class at 4 years of age and can remember a love of dance from then on. I became serious about ballet as a future career from age 9 years.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
Being selected to attend the Australian Ballet School full time has been a significant highlight. Most recently, I had the privilege of dancing at the schools 50th Anniversary Gala with the Australian Ballet Company. Prior to this, I had success performing at the international Alana Haines Ballet Scholarships in 2011 & 2013. Another highlight has been training with the Queensland Ballet Junior Program and dancing with the Brisbane City Youth Ballet Company for 10 years.
What is your dream?
My dream is to become a world class prima ballerina guest performing in Europe in some of the top ballet companies of the world such as the London Royal Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet and of course Australian Ballet. My first step is to train at a world leading facility - the Australian Ballet School and achieve my best.
Who or what have inspired you?
I am so fortunate to be training at a school where the Australian Ballet Company train at the end of the same hallway. Daily, I watch the company members train and perform. I am inspired by their dedication, commitment and effort which drives me to work harder on my technique and skills. When they are on stage performing for an audience, I see their passion, emotion and the love of dance and it is those moments that remind me why I dance.
Who's your hero?
There are a number of hero’s I look up to. They include ex-dancers who are giving back to me and current day leading ballet dancers such as Alina Cojocaru who have sacrificed much to achieve their goals. On a personal level, my family members are my hero’s as they are my greatest support and role models and have sacrificed for me to achieve my dream.
Any other special talents?
When younger I spent a lot of time at swimming training and competitions. I am also a snow skier and have skied my first black diamond run in Snowbird, Utah.
My IPod is full of classical music from famous ballets including Swan Lake, Don Quixote and Paquita, but I also love the latest songs from artists like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.
I love “Blended” with Adam Sandler, but “Suddenly 30” and “Centre Stage” are my all time favourite movies.
The Hunger Games Series
Favourite TV Show?
Friends and Hone and Away
Being a ballet dancer, I only eat super lean and healthy foods. I love all good food especially cooked salmon. I will admit though, that my most favourite food is chocolate (as a treat).
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
Living, training and studying away from home interstate and independently, requires substantial funds to lease an apartment, buy books and uniforms, pay fees and cover the costs of dance leotards and tutus (not to mention many pairs of ballet flats and pointe shoes!). The money will assist with the living and training costs and with ongoing costs of the many medical and professional services required weekly including physiotherapy, podiatry, dietician, psychologist, myotherapy. I am hoping there will be a little left over to fly home during school holidays to visit my family in Brisbane.
Last words: Quote or Motto you live by?
“Appreciate what you have and thank those who help you along the way”. “Work hard with every opportunity gifted to you”. My personal favourite quote is "It is good to be inspired but it is great to inspire others"
