Name: Deanna Lockett
Pursuit: Kick Start Grant - Speed Skating
Deanna’s dream is to represent Australia and she hopes to make it to the 2014 Winter Olympics after being targeted by the Winter Institute of Australia as a potential candidate. Deanna has held the position of National Champion for 5 years now. At the recent National Competition Deanna broke three Australian records, one of them was a senior ladies record that had stood for 18 years. Deanna has relocated to Melbourne from Queensland and will study year 10 via Distance Education to train with the other members of the Australian National Team. Her whole family intends to relocate over the coming months to support her.
When did you start?
I began Short Track Speed Skating when I was 9 years old. I have been skating for 6 years now and still loving it.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
I would have to say 2010 was a good year. I was Australian National Champion in my division for the fifth year running, and came 2nd in the Senior Ladies Division. I broke a number of Australian Records, including one that had stood for 18 years. I also qualified to compete in the Junior World Championships to be held in Italy in February 2011. I was also awarded Female Junior Athlete of the Year for 2010.
What is your dream?
My dream is to be on the National Team, and to represent Australia at the World Cups and ultimately at the Winter Olympics in 2014 in Russia.
Who or what have inspired you?
Who's your hero?
I don’t really have a hero. I take inspiration from many people.
Any other special talents?
Cross Country Running.
Favourite TV Show?
Seafood is my favourite, and I love a good steak.
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
I will use the grant, to help fund my travel to Junior World Championships in Italy. It will be my first competition where I will be competing overseas representing Australia. Thanks so much!!
