Pillar: Business, Leadership and Community
I am one half of a female duo that has created a social enterprise to help melt barriers to youth employment and entrepreneurship. Our enterprise is called Social Pops; we create chocolate pops to empower young undiscovered entrepreneurs with basic business and enterprise skills - using our business as the real life case study. This will be delivered through 3 key actions: unique work experience, employment and by operating as a transparent business.
Crystal and Cheree are two women on a mission to disrupt business as usual. Once upon a time, we were both was excluded from work and education opportunities, and found ourselves unable to reach our fullest potential. We met about 7 years ago and instantly connected over our desires to start businesses and to also make a difference in our community. Due to our own personal circumstances, neither of us were able to support ourselves through university, neither had enough funds to buy a franchise and unfortunately we were never lucky enough to win tattslotto. But, we still really wanted to learn about business and better yet start one! When we were both teenagers, neither of us had any role models that were around to support or nurture our ideas, so they didn’t go anywhere. When you living a life that is completely different to the life you want to live, mentors are critical. We’ve both learned this valuable lesson and it has helped shape the values of our enterprise. Eventually, we combined our passions and started Social Pops; a business that aims to support young people to learn business skills hands-on; regardless of experience or background, so that they too can reach their fullest potential.
Our dream is to build a community where all young people have a chance to broaden their skills and job readiness, develop entrepreneurial thinking, and build their confidence together. We imagine a future where young people of all socio-economic backgrounds can access tools and opportunities to educate themselves and secure better long term life outcomes. We plan to achieve this through our social enterprise; Social Pops. Once we have a self-sustainable enterprise, employment opportunities will become available. Our plan is to build and grow our business as a community, sharing and learning with and from each other whilst enjoying some Social Pops!
This scholarship will allow us to secure Social Pops as an innovative business by being able to purchase equipment that will allow us to customise choc pops into any shape imaginable. Think about licking an Aim for the Stars ice pop! We will be the only company in Australia to have this product offering and it will instantly see Social Pops needing a larger tribe of empowered young people actively learning together. The use of this new-age equipment will offer unique learning opportunities to ensure our young people also begin to learn about technology; our world is changing is this is crucial to the future of work. We would hope that this business differentiation will see some savvy business advisors take our business seriously and offer some in-kind mentorship.
