Name: Bronwyn Jones
Pursuit: Medicine (Global Health Advocacy)
As a recently-graduated doctor, I am passionate about global health issues, and have been involved in local, national and international activities that aim to both promote global health, and to inform others about this very important topic. With more concerted efforts to overcome global health inequities, starting right here at home in Australia, I believe this dream is highly achievable. My goals for this year involve travelling to many local, national and international locations for training and health advocacy purposes. The Aim for the Stars grant will really assist me in realising these opportunities that would otherwise be un-affordable.
When did you start?
I became involved in global health during my medical school career, initially through initiatives organised by the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA). The IFMSA taught me the importance of global health and empowered me to advocate for better health standards worldwide. I am currently serving as IFMSA's Regional Coordinator for the Asia-Pacific and am involved in health activism and education within and around the region.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
My career highlight has been seeing the good that has come about through some of my efforts to improve global health. By helping to educate and empower others, I am inspired and rewarded with the satisfaction of having achieved something.
What is your dream?
My dream is to help achieve universal healthcare for all people, everywhere. Everyone deserves the basic human right to health, and I am passionate about changing the status quo.
Who or what have inspired you?
Who's your hero?
My heroes are all those who have inspired me to become a better person during the course of my life. My mother and father are my biggest heroes!
Any other special talents?
I can breakdance pretty well (not!) :P
I like just about all genres of music, although my favourites would have to be rock and world music. I’m currently listening to an album by Oliver Mtukudzi, an artist from my country of birth, Zimbabwe.
One of my favourites is German foreign films
Thanks largely to my half- Korean heritage, I am a big fan of all things Korean. In particular I enjoy Galbi (which is basically beef or pork ribs cooked over charcoal), kimchi (fermented spiced cabbage – it tastes better than it sounds!), and gim (thin slivers of salted seaweed – delicious!)
Favourite TV Show?
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
This amazing Aim for the Stars Grant will help cover the costs associated with my travel to international conferences and meetings, such as the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organisation, and the World Health Summit, where I will be representing Australia and the Asia-Pacific region in advocating for better global health standards as well as contributing to enhanced awareness of important health issues worldwide. I would like to thank the Layne Beachley Foundation for this truly wonderful gift; I am very grateful.
