Pursuit: Media Workshops for Young People
I am passionate about providing young people with an opportunity to use their creative skills to share their stories. To do this I have been running Media Makers, a series of workshops in film making for young people aged 15-20 in Darwin NT and mentoring young people on film projects I am currently undertaking. So far, these experiences have been dependent on school holiday activity funding, but it is my dream to have the flexibility to provide them on demand and with my own coordination. The Aim for the Stars grant would assist me to run Media Makers activities for young people and establish documentation to work with flexibility and independence.
When did you start?
I started my little consultancy and running workshops for young people in January 2013. But I have been interested in storytelling, film making and communications forever. I was a very chatty little kid obsessed with the family recorder, it was inevitable really.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
I was a finalist in the NT Young Australian of the Year, and a finalist in the National Youth Awards for my work with Media Makers and mentoring young people… it was such an amazing feeling to be recognised for something that I love doing and very humbling. I think starting the business officially was pretty mind blowing as well.
What is your dream?
My dream is to create opportunities for young people to share their stories and ideas. So often, young people are talked on behalf of or not provided with the platform to express their ideas. With the Media Makers workshops and mentoring on my projects I hope to create a culture of confidence and skills development with young people in Darwin. I want the young people that participate in the workshops and work with my on my film projects to feel confident to go on and use media to share their own ideas and stories.
Who or what have inspired you?
Who's your hero?
My boyfriend (awwww).
Any other special talents?
Stand up comedy. I have a huge ego, although the talent to do this is probably that I have a huge ego :) I love making people laugh and perform at gigs around the NT.
I love the local music scene in the Northern Territory. I work for an organisation called MusicNT that supports local artists and provides opportunities for them to perform and develop.
I love movies so choosing one is pretty difficult… but I guess Fight Club… loved the twist in that.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
Favourite TV Show?
Breaking Bad… amazing!
Pizza and coffee!
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
I intend on using the grant to support me in running free workshops for young people interested in media. I will also use the grant to update some of my equipment so I can provide mentoring opportunities for young people on my projects. Up until this point my workshops and mentoring have been voluntary and reliant on local Government grants.
Last words: Quote or Motto you live by?
Be terminally positive and spread it.
