Name: Amelia Townsend
Pursuit: Ballet. I will pursue this by working extremely hard and by always listening to my teachers advice. I will always give my best at all times.
My name is Amelia Townsend and I am 13 years old. Ballet means the world to me and it’s the path and career I would like to take.
Amelia has competed and won her dances at competitions and eisteddfods since she was 5 years old. She has won The Most Outstanding Dancer, the Most Promising Classical Dancer and the Grand Champion amongst many other awards, since the age of 6 years old.
She qualified and competed at the World Dance Championships in Los Angeles in 2010 and the finals of the Youth America Grand Prix in New York in 2011. She won her classical ballet at the Sydney eisteddfod for 3 years. Amelia achieved 100% in her RAD Intermediate ballet exam in 2011, when she had just turned 12 years old. She was also a member of the Queensland Ballet Junior Extension Program and the Australian Ballet Interstate/International Training Program before being offered full-time at the Australian Ballet School in 2012, at the age of 12. Amelia moved to Melbourne in 2012 to attend the school.
When did you start?
I started at the age of 3 at the Annette Roselli Dance Academy.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
One of my biggest highlights was flying to New York to compete in the Youth America Grand Prix. Another highlight was winning my classical 3 times at the Sydney eisteddfod, but my biggest achievement was being the youngest student ever to be offered full-time ballet at the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. It was also amazing to dance the role of Young Clara in the Nutcracker, in the Australian Ballet School's end-of-year performance.
What is your dream?
My dream is to one day become a professional ballet dancer with my favourite ballet company in the world, The Australian Ballet.
Who or what have inspired you?
My mum has inspired me as she was a professional dancer herself and danced in many companies all around the world. The other thing that inspires me is to watch the Australian Ballet dancers dance on stage.
Who's your hero?
My hero is Svetlana Zakharova. I think she is the most amazing dancer ever and I love watching her dance.
Any other special talents?
I also used to do jazz, tap, contemporary, national and song and dance. I also did rhythmic gymnastics for 5 years and competed at the Australian National Championships where I came 5th overall!
My favourite music is by Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and many other artists.
My favourite movie is the Chipmunks.
My favourite book is Mao's Last Dancer.
Favourite TV Show?
My favourite TV show is 'Keeping up with the Kardashians'.
My favourite food is chocolate and Greek salad.
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
This money will help with the cost of my fees for the Australian Ballet School. If I hadn't won this money, I might have had to leave the school which wouldn't have been good for my career, as the school is an amazing and inspiring place.
Last words: Quote or Motto you live by?
