Name: Amber Ross
Pursuit: Athletics - Athletics/Throwing
My name is Amber and I am 12 years old and I compete in Athletics, and in particular the throws events – discus, shot put, javelin. I hope to keep improving and one day represent Australia at world competitions, like the Commonwealth Games, the World Youth Championships and the Olympic Games. The Aim for the Stars grant will assist me greatly with the expense of travel and competition.
When did you start?
I started at Sale Little Athletics when I was six, in under seven
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
I have two achievements I rank equally in the last year. I won three Victorian state titles in discus - two of which were as a younger athlete in the under 14 age group. I also won my first national medal - bronze in shot put - at the School Sport Australia national championships in Brisbane in November.
What is your dream?
I hope to keep improving and one day represent Australia at world competitions, like the Commonwealth Games, the World Youth Championships and the Olympics.
Who or what have inspired you?
I have been inspired by lots of people who have given up their time to help me - including Shane at Little Aths Victoria, Bryan Neighbour (who was my shot put coach for my first national competition in 2011), my coach Simon, and my other coach Andrew. Of course I can't forget about my family and friends who have been very supportive all the way.
Who's your hero?
My athletics heroes are Dani Samuels and Ben Harradine (both of who took the time to stop and talk to me at Lakeside stadium one night), and I admire Sally Pearson for her determination and not giving up on her goals. I also admire other people who have not let things get in the way of doing what they want - like Jessica Watson.
Any other special talents?
I like horse riding, in particular western discplines. I play the guitar. I also like teaching the younger athletes how to do the things that I have learnt to be good at. We all have to start somewhere.
I like country music the most, but listen to lots of different stuff. On my guitar I like to play songs by Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood and others.
I have seen Grown Ups 2 about five times and it still makes me laugh heaps.
Mum always says that I have my head stuck in a book. At the moment I am reading Sally Pearsons book. One of my very favourites is called UGLY by Robert Hoge. It is a story about overcoming adversities in life.
Favourite TV Show?
I like shows that make me laugh and even if it is repeats
Steak and salad. I also love pasta, especially when I have lots on.
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
Travelling to national competitions costs lots of money so the grant will help with this - for fares, fuel and accommodation. I have been to two national competitions in another state in the last three months. I also need new spin shoes so some of the grant might go toward that.
Last words: Quote or Motto you live by?
I have two - a poster on my wall says "Dream, believe, achieve". My favourite training singlet at the moment has written on it "Dreams only work if you do" and I like this because I know how hard I have worked to get to where I am now with my athletics.
