Name: Amber Arazny
Pursuit: Halfpipe Snowboard
I am a 23 year old snowboarder, from the NSW South Coast town of Cambewarra, on the Australian Winter Olympic Shadow team as a halfpipe snowboard hopeful for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. As of late 2013, I was sitting in 4th position, out of the 6 Aussie women who are contenders for the four available spots to represent Australia. I’m one of few snowboarders on the Olympic Shadow Team who doesn’t receive any funding or support from the NSW Institute of Sport, or Olympic Winter Institute of Australia. The Aim for the Stars grant assisted with my travel to the final three qualifying events prior to Olympic Games selection. Unfortunately I just missed out on selection, and am now looking towards the South Korea 2018 Winter Games!
When did you start?
I first snowboarded when I was about 10, and began taking it more seriously and competing when I was 15.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
Just being considered as a potential athlete for the Australian Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics is something I never imagined I would achieve. And everytime I land a new trick, or put down a clean, big run that I am proud of is what its all about :)
What is your dream?
To compete at the Winter Olympics, to successfully represent Australia internationally and raise our profile as a winter sports nation, and to finish my Uni degree so I can start giving back and contributing to the community and those who I can help.
Who or what have inspired you?
As cliche' as it might sound, Torah Bright is an amazing woman and athlete Ive always looked up to.
Who's your hero?
My parents, and my twin and older sisters, because they always believe in me even when I might not.
Any other special talents?
Anything.. everything! Im constantly listening to Triple J. I think the further from Australia I am, the more I listen to it haha!
Ive instantly forgotten every movie I have ever seen.
Favourite TV Show?
I love baking so anything sweet! And fresh, local fruit and veg :)
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
It will go towards my coaching, travel and accommodation for the last three Olympic qualifying events I went in!
Last words: Quote or Motto you live by?
"Bend your knees and speed is your friend"... from my Dad at my first ever snowboarding competition xxx
