Name: Amber Arazny
Pursuit: To compete at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Halfpipe. (And to eventually graduate from the University of New England with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science (Clinical Exercise Physiology) which I'm currently studying through distance education).
My name is Amber Arazny and I’m a 22 year old snowboarder from the small town of Cambewarra on the NSW South Coast. Fine out more about me at my blog.
When did you start?
I first tried snowboaring when I was about 10 years old. Then when I was 15 I decided I wanted to snowboard all the time so I joined Perisher Winter Sports Club, and competed in my first halfpipe competition when I was 16.
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
Definitely finishing 13th (just 3 places out from semi's) at the World Championships in Stoneham, Canada. Also finishing in 5th at the 2011 Copper Revolution Tour for Halfpipe which resulted in me being named on the Australian National Halfpipe team. And representing Australia at Junior World Championships in 2010.
What is your dream?
My dream is to compete for Australia at the 2014 Sochi Winter Oympics in Halfpipe. I want to make finals there and snowboard with the best in the world! I also want to push, and raise the profile of, women's snowboarding and help close the perceived ability gap that exists between men and women in extreme sports. I want to take everything I learn and do on a snowboard to the dangerous, unpredictable back country, and continue to travel to some of the most amazing places in the world to snowboard while meeting some of the most inspiring people around. Ultimately I want to stay injury free so that I can snowboard for as long as I am able to!
Who or what have inspired you?
First and foremost, my whole family. My Mum and Dad, twin sister, Tegan, and older sister, Shae. They have always been there to support, encourage and push me in everything I aim for. They celebrate the highs with me, and are there through the lows with me to put everything in perspective and remind why I love what I do. I'm inspired to ride and be like Japanese snowboarder Kazuhiro Kokubo because he snowboards for himself, and does everything his own way.. and always with the most steeze and style ever! And of course everyday I snowboard, I look forward to it because I know I get to shred with all my girls.. Biba Turnbull, Michaela Davis Meehan, Amanda Taylor, Alex Fitch, Danielle Adams, Mikaela Casey, Ally Carroll, and everyone else I've ever had the pleasure of snowboarding with. It just wouldn't be the same without you all!!
Who's your hero?
Torah Bright is easily a hero of mine.. she is so naturally talented and down to earth, and proves where hard work and dedication can get you. Plus she is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet and always has time to say hi no matter who you are. Kevin Pearce is also a snowboarder who is a hero to me, plus a lot of other people. After suffering a life-threatening head injury, he has finally strapped back onto a snowboard and is always smiling. He proves that you can always find a way to get back to doing what you are passionate about - not competing or training, just snowboarding, loving life, and appreciating that he is still able to do it. Oh, and Kazu Kokubo!
Any other special talents?
Ummm, I can tie a lolly snake in a knot in my mouth?!
Where do I begin? I cant leave the house without my iPod! I love Aussie music.. Ball Park Music, Hungry Kids of Hungary, Hilltop Hoods, Temper Trap, The Rubens, Thundamentals, Hermitude, Illy. Basically anything on Triple J. So many! And old school songs.. think 'Blue Moon', 'Under the Boardwalk', 'Lover you don't treat me good', Bob Dylan, Billy Joel (thank Ma and Pa Arazny for those ones!). Then there's The Black Keys, Grouplove, Mumford and Sons, Alabama Shakes, a little T-Swift, Kanye and Jay-Z.............. I think it's easier just to say, anything I can sing along to!
Lords of Dogtown. The Illusionist. Pitch Perfect. And anything with Emma Stone in it!
Easy.. Harry Potter.
Favourite TV Show?
Also easy.. How I Met Your Mother.
I love fresh food.. fruit and veg! Sweet potato is easily my fave haha. Also sushi. And I can't travel without Vegemite or Milo.. I'm definitely an Aussie kid! But I'm kinda notorious among my family and friends for my sweet sweet tooth and love lollies, chocolate and dessert!
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
The grant will help pay for my travel and accommodation to the World Cup events I am able to do this season. There are events in Canada, Russia, Spain and America so that's a lot of travelling.
Last words: Quote or Motto you live by?
Advice from my wise father when I was about to do my very first halfpipe competition: "Bend your knees, and speed is your friend"! (He just didn't want to see me get hurt!) Thanks Dad :P
